Tejo Remy Drawer Project
If you're into recycling, conservation, or reusing old things, and if you've ever wanted something of your own displayed in a museum, here's your chance.
The High has commissioned Dutch designer Tejo Remy to create a special permanent piece for our decorative art collections and the city of Atlanta. The piece is a unique chest of drawers, stacked together irregularly and held together with a furniture mover's strap. In order to complete the chest, we need your drawers! 20 drawers will be chosen for use in the final piece. Submission Deadline: February 15, 2008

Submit Your Drawer
Take part in this exciting commission by photographing a drawer from your dresser, nightstand, jewelry box or anywhere drawers are regularly stored! Submissions will be taken now through February 15, 2008. The drawer can be in any size, style, and material, as long as it is structurally sound. If your drawer is chosen, it will become a permanent part of this piece, not able to be returned.
For your drawer to be considered, each submission must include the following 5 items:
1. 2 color images of your drawer: one empty and one in situ/original context (each no larger than 1MB)
2. A list of materials from your drawer (wood, metal, plastic, etc.)
3. The dimensions of your drawer (height X width X depth)
4. Your name, e-mail, mailing address, and telephone number
5. A 500-word or less description of your drawer and why you'd like it to be chosen for this project.

About the Commission
The Dutch designer Tejo Remy conceptualized his You Cant Lay Down Your Memories chest of drawers for the Droog Design collaborative in 1991. It was immediately heralded as a benchmark for new design of the decade and has since become an icon of 20th-century design.
Each chest begins as a random selection of twenty drawers of various styles and materials that have been collected from various sources. Precisely-crafted cases are made for each drawer. Then the whole is stacked into an interesting visual composition and held together with a furniture mover's strap. The final product's a fully functional chest of drawers addresses Dadaist issues of anti-design and aesthetics, as well as more topical concerns of recycling and environmental conservation.

About the Artist
Born in 1960, Tejo Remy works as an independent interior and product designer in Utrecht, often in collaboration with Rene Veenhuizen. By approaching the traditional with an innovative and conceptual eye, Remy brings contemporary style to discarded objects and forces the individual to interact differently with the finished product. He has been commissioned by gallery W 139, Museum Boymans van Beuningen, and VROM, the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment.
